Hi - you might be interested in participating in a new blog carnival called House of Herps that is devoted exclusively to reptiles and amphibians. The first issue will come out on Dec 18th, I'm sure the admins would love to have one of your posts included in that issue.

They would be such an interesting species to research, I wonder if RFID technology could be used with them to locate and track them underground?

A draft Kihansi Spray Toad Reintroduction Plan is currently being reviewed, and it is hoped that this will be finalized in the first quarter of 2010. Although the plan is not yet ready for release, it builds on a Population and Habitat Viability Assessment (PHVA) workshop that was held in Tanzania in May 2007, which produced guidance on how Kihansi Spray Toad management challenges could be handled by developing a recovery plan for the species.

...the goals of this program is to establish a viable, free-ranging population of the KST within the species former natural habitat, together with protection and restoration of the unique habitat upon which the species relies for survival. The re-introduction requires a multidisciplinary approach involving a team of persons drawn from a variety of backgrounds with appropriate expertise.

The plan seeks to assess the liklihood of success of any reintroductions prior to them being undertaken. Stay tuned for further updates!

I knew that Chytrid led to the thickening of the skin, leading to blocking of water uptake, and the ion balance, but I would have assumed it would have killed via suffocation. Thankfully we have not detected any Chytrid in the populations we have looked at in pond breeding salamanders, but we have seen Frog Virus 3 in ponds that have regular cattle access in Spotted Salamander larvae.

It is staggering how quickly Chytrid spreads. I do not know if anyone read an article in the magazine Conservation, which detailed some of the animal and plant species that come into this country that are not even able to be identified but to the lower taxonomic classes. And the bulk of these come from hot spots, where no, or little disease testing is done.
